Based on Katherine Paterson's young-adult novel and filmed in picturesque New Zealand,Bridge to Terabithiahas lessons to impart about empathy and self-expression, but the tone is never heavy-handed. Jesse (sleepy-eyed Josh Hutcherson,Zathura), a fifth-grade loner, lives in the country with his parents and four sisters, including pesky May Belle (Bailee Madison), who adores him. His strict father (Robert Patrick,The Terminator 2) works in a hardware store. Money is tight and classmates make fun of his hand-me-downs, so Jesse finds refuge in running and drawing. Everything changes when two writers and their daughter Leslie (wide-eyed AnnaSophia Robb,Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) move in next door. Leslie is faster than all the boys, which initially puts Jesse off, but the two soon bond over their love of make-believe. In the forest, they find a creek that can only be crossed by rope. Leslie names the land on the other side Terabithia, where they imagine themselves rulers of the kingdom. Jesse and Leslie also connect with their unconventional music teacher, Ms. Edmonds (Zooey Deschanel,Elf), who encourages their creativity. Despite the tension at home, Jesse's personal life is finally coming together when the unthinkable happens. Will he revert to his anti-social ways or will he grow from the experience? Though aimed at all ages, pre-school students may find Terebithia's creatures frightening. For grade-school kids and up, however, there's much to savor in this smartly written, sensitively acted film.--Kathleen C. Fennessy
An excellent family movie! If you are looking for an excellent family movie, I highly recommend the Bridge To Terabithia. I had no idea what this movie was about when I bought it. I was not disappointed at all. It is a very good childrens (not too young) movie or an excellent family movie.
The most powerful film I have ever seen... I remember when I first saw the trailers and previews for this movie. "Oh, great", I thought. "Another 'Lord of the Rings' wannabe or 'Wizard of Oz' rip-off. Like the the 'Chronicles of Narnia' or 'Harry Potter'".
My wife rented this movie. I figured I would just work on my laptop and pretend to watch the movie.
It turns out that I absolutely loved this movie. It has an emotional richness that I have never seen before. Yes, there is a horrific tragedy, almost unbearable, but that is a part of life and an essential part of this story.
If you want an escapist, entertaining, uplifting film with a happy ending, then this movie is not for you.
On the other hand, if you want to immerse yourself in a touching, heartwarming story, this movie should fit the bill.
If you have even a dim glimmer of intent of seeing this movie, I urge you caution in reading some of the other reviews; some have spoiled the essential parts of the movie. I do not think this movie would have had the impact it had on me had I known what happens, and when.Keep your mind wide open! This joyous movie was a pleasant surprise. It was produced by the same people who brought us The Chronicles of Narnia which was superb. So, I was anxious to see BTT hoping for the same vivid special effects. Although the effects are not as numerous in BTT, you will not be disappointed. As suggested in the book, quite a bit is left up to your own imagination.
Any adult, or child, who suffered or is suffering through junior high at the hands of bullies, can definitely relate to this movie. It's the story of Jess, an outcast at school and with his family, who loves to draw. His imagination gets a boost when he becomes friends with Leslie, the new girl at school who keeps her mind wide open! They build a world out of their imagination where they rule.
The brief discussion of religion between Jess and Leslie was quite a surprise for a Disney movie, but definitely not offensive. All of the children are so adorable, and you may find yourself a bit teary eyed. I know I did.
If you have kids, struggling in school or not, sit down and enjoy this one with them. It's definitely a wholesome kids movie worth adding to the collection for years to come.
